The cross-border networking workshop of actors involved in the fight against environmental crime around the PoMoCo complex (PONASI in Burkina Faso, Mole in Ghana and Comoé in Côte d’Ivoire) was held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, from August 18 to 20, 2021.
The meeting aimed at fostering networking and cooperation between actors involved in the Fight against Environmental Crime (LCE) evolving around and within the PoMoCo complex.
The thirty or so participants from three countries (Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana), came from the protected areas of the PoMoCo complex, from the posts and units of the chain of custody.
The workshop was an opportunity to share experiences in environmental crime, and to become familiar with the platform of the Information System on Environmental Crime (SICE) in order to be able to record the environmental crimes observed.
At the end of the work and discussions, several recommendations were made, including the strengthening of the involvement of local communities in the intelligence system in the fight against environmental crime around the complex; the protection of sources of information and informants; and the expansion of the cross-border management agreement to the three countries, among others.
The meeting was organized by the Regional Program for Central and West Africa (PACO) of IUCN, through the Regional Governance of Protected Areas in West Africa project (PAPBio C2-Governance). As a reminder, Component 2 of the PAPBio (Regional Governance of Protected Areas and Security) aims at instilling a regional dynamic for the effective management of protected areas and climate risks, sharing and capitalizing on experiences and knowledge at all levels, and the fight against environmental crime.
